Creamy green tea ice cream with velvety chocolate chips

A soothing ritual

Green tea – especially in its powdered and whisked preparation called matcha–is often at the heart of the Japanese tea ceremony. In an elaborate presentation of an important staple in Japanese agriculture, the ceremony created around it honors not only the ingredient as a food, but as a cultural cornerstone. Its roots in Zen Buddhism belie the calming character of tea, augmented by extraordinary attention to detail.

We have endeavored to pay the same level of attention to our green tea ice cream. The flavors of soft-serve ice cream you’ll see throughout Japan are vanilla and matcha. Walk through any of Japan’s serene and magnificent gardens (our chef’s favorite is Kenroku-en in Kanazawa) with some green tea ice cream, and feel the peace of the garden sink in alongside the smooth and uplifting flavor of your cone. Complementing it, we added the uncomplicated flavor of white chocolate–chocolate in its simplest form – to add another gentle path for your palate to meander.

Pairings:

Fish is as much a staple in the Japanese diet as chicken is in the U.S. Just like green tea, fish tends to have mild and simple, straightforward flavors. This makes our green tea ice cream a perfect segue; you can truly have a peaceful and bountifully flavorful experience without any jagged edges.

Or, if you’re dessert-minded, grab a couple graham crackers and sandwich it, it’s a tremendously satisfying experience!
